Constant Dhikr Analogy

  • When you switch on your computer, the Windows program starts. You can then open up other applications like Word, Excel etc., but Windows will always be running in the background.

  • This is the analogy of how we should be with dhikr: it should always be there in the background (Windows) even while we are engaged in our everyday activities (the other applications) .

The Reward of Testimony

  • During the period of drought in the time of Nabi Yusuf ‘alaihis salaam, a man came to the city. He received provisions from the officials but asked them for more. They refused. He told them that if they knew who he was, they would have given him more. He then went directly to Nabi Yusuf ‘alaihis salaam.  When Nabi Yusuf ‘alaihis salaam found out that he was the person who had testified in his defense when Zulaikhah had accused him, he treated him well and gave him generously from the wealth of the state.

  • If this is how well someone who testified on behalf of another person is rewarded, how do we think Allah ta’ala will reward those who testify to His Oneness?

Imaan and A’maal

  • If imaan is strong, a’maal will be healthy.

  • When a full moon is present, there is a high tide. If the full moon of the presence of Allah ta’ala is within us, we will have high imaan.

Our Ambition for Our Children

  • Nowadays, parents just want worldly success for their children: they want them to become doctors, engineers, pilots, etc.

  • How many of us want success in the next world for our children? How many of us want our children to become the awliyaa’ of Allah?

A story of parents who wanted their child to grow up to be a pious person:

  • They sent their child to madrasah from a young age. Every day the child would come home hungry and ask his mother for food. The mother would tell him to go make wudu’, go to the musallaa and ask Allah ta’ala for the food. While he was doing that, she would prepare the food and leave it in the room. When he would finish, he would find the food and eat it. His mother told him that Allah ta’ala had given it to him, just as He provides for all other creatures. In that way his love for Allah ta’ala increased and the greatness of Allah ta’ala was established in his heart. Once his mother went to visit some family members, and forgot to make the food for him. On her way home, she was crying and worrying about what her child would think. When she arrived home she saw he was sleeping, so she made the food quickly and then woke him up. She asked him if he was hungry but he said no. She asked why and he replied that he had done as he always did: made dua to Allah for food, and when he was done he found a piece of bread in the house. That was the most delicious food he had ever eaten.

Limitations of Our Intellect

  • We use a scale to measure the weight of things. Yet we can’t use a scale to measure the weight of a mountain: it can’t handle it.
  • In the same way, our intellect is not big enough to comprehend the greatness of Allah ta’ala.
  • Leave alone the Creator, even if we just ponder on the vastness of creation it is too mind-boggling for us to handle.

  • A chick in an egg cannot comprehend the world outside the egg. This does not mean such a world doesn’t exist.
  • We are now in the egg of this world. We can’t comprehend the realities of the next life, but need to have faith in it.

  • A fish in the sea sees a piece of meat and thinks that it is something good for him. Another wiser fish warns him that it’s a trap. It is to his own benefit to heed the warning of the other fish.
  • This is an example of us and the warnings that have come to us regarding the punishment of the Hereafter.

  • When Nabi Musa ‘alaihis salaam confronted the magicians, they conjured up their snakes. At such a time our intellect would tell us that the last thing we should do is throw down our stick, that we should keep it to defend ourselves. Yet that is what Allah ta’ala commanded him to do.
  • Similarly with the splitting of the sea: at such a time our intellect would tell us to keep the staff to use it to fight the enemy and that hitting the sea with it is a senseless action.
  • The lesson is that what Allah ta’ala tells us to do is always correct, and that our intellect is fallible.

Benefit and Harm

  • Nabi Musa ‘alaihis salaam had a staff that brought him a lot of benefit: “Qaala hiya ‘asaay; atawakka-u ‘alayhaa wa ahush-shu bihaa ‘alaa ghanamee wa liya feehaa ma-aaribu ukhraa – It is my staff; I lean upon it, and I bring down leaves for my sheep and I have therein other uses.” (20: 18)

  • That same staff became something harmful when he threw it down: “Fa alqaahaa fa idhaa hiya hayyatun tas’aa – So he threw it down, and thereupon it was a snake, moving swiftly.” (20: 20)

  • In the same way, everything else in the universe is merely a means: it can be either beneficial and harmful. The effects are controlled entirely by Allah ta’ala alone.
