The Qur’an on the Sahabah

Just a few of the ayat which make reference to the noble status of the Sahabah radiyallahu ‘anhum.

–

  • Wa kadhaalika ja’alnaakum ummataw wasataa – And thus we have made you a just community.    (2: 143) This is primarily addressing the  Sahabah radiyallahu ‘anhum.

  • Waminan naasi may yashree nafsahub tighaa-a mardaatillah – And among men is he who sells himself to seek the pleasure of Allah. (2: 207)  This is in reference to Suhaib ar-Rumi radiyallahu ‘anh.

  • Innalladheena aamanoo waalladheena haajaroo wa jaahadoo fee sabeelillahi ulaa-ika yarjoona rahmatallah – Indeed, those who have believed and those who have emigrated and fought in the cause of Allah – those expect the mercy of Allah. (2: 218) The past tense verb is used here.

  • Was sabiqoonal awwaloona minal muhaajireena wal ansaari walladheenat taba’oohum bi ihsanir radiyallahu ‘anhum waradoo ‘anh – And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhajireen and the Ansar and those who followed them with good conduct – Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. (9: 100) We should thus follow the Sahabah radiyallahu ‘anhum for Allah to be pleased with us.

The First and the Last

  • People who do things first are given special preference. That is why the Sahabah radiyallahu ‘anhum have such a high rank: they were the first to believe.
    • We can see this in the hadith where ‘Ukashah radiyallahu ‘anh asked the Prophet sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam to make dua that he be granted Jannah.  The Prophet sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam did so. Another Sahabi radiyallahu ‘anhu then made the same request but this time the Prophet sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said, “‘Sabaqaka ‘Ukaashah – ‘Ukaashah beat you to it.” (Sahih Bukhari)

  • In the tenth year after the hijrah, the Prophet sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said that in 100 years time no one living at that time would still be alive.
    • Abu Tufail radiyallahu ‘anh was the last living Sahabi. He passed away in the year 110 AH.

Parable of a Candle

  • A believer is like a candle: his body is the wax and his imaan is the wick. Both are needed.

  • The Prophet sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam was the first candle. All the other believers, the Sahabah radiyallahu ‘anhum, took their light from him, and they in turn passed it on to others.
