  • During the expedition to Tabuk, ibn Mas’ud radiyallahu ‘anh once got up at night for Tahajjud and saw a light. When he went nearer he saw the Prophet sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam and Abu Bakr radiyallahu ‘anh digging a grave. He overhead the Prophet sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam say concerning the person being buried, “O Allah, I am pleased with him, so be pleased with him.” On hearing that he said, “How I wish I was the one in that grave!

  • The Prophet sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said to him, “Iqra’ ‘alayyal Qur’aan – Recite the Qur’an to me.

  • He learnt more than 70 surahs directly from the Prophet sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam.

  • He was the first to recite the Qur’an aloud to the kuffar. He recited either Surah Yasin or ar-Rahman. The kuffar beat him so badly that he lost consciousness.

  • The Prophet sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam and Abu Bakr radiyallahu ‘anh came to him, at the time when he was a shepherd and not yet a Muslim. They asked him for some milk to drink, but he replied that he could not give them anything, since he had been entrusted with the flock and did not own them. The Prophet sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam then asked him to bring a dry sheep. He sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam then milked it and miraculously, it gave milk and they both drank. ibn Mas’ud radiyallahu ‘anh then asked to be taught what the Prophet sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam had said, and then became Muslim.

  • He was the sixth person to embrace Islam. He was not yet baligh at the time.

  • The Prophet sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam told Ubay radiyallau ‘anh that he had been instructed by Allah ta’ala to recite the Qur’an to him. He asked whether Allah ta’ala had mentioned him by name, and when the Prophet sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said yes, his eyes filled with tears.  (Sahih Bukhari)
