Neither Wealth nor Sons…

  • Allah ta’ala says, “Yawma laa yanfa’u maaluw wa laa banoon; illaa man atallaha bi qalbin saleem – The Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail, but only he (will prosper) that brings to Allah a sound heart.” (26: 88 – 89) According to one tafsir, “wealth” here refers to ones ‘ilm (knowledge) and “children” refers to ones a’maal (deeds).

Sins and ‘Ujb

  • The Prophet sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said, “Law lam tudhniboo la khasheetu ‘alaikum maa huwa akbaru minh: al-‘Ujb – Were you to not sin, I would have feared for you that which is worse than that: ‘Ujb (self-amazement).” (Link. There are different views concerning the authenticity of this.)

  • A sin that makes you humble is better than obedience which causes you to become arrogant.” (ibn ‘Ata-illah)

Dhikr: Heart and Tongue

  • Dhikr must be done with the heart: “Wa laa tuti’ man aghfalnaa qalbahu ‘an dhikrinaa – And do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance.” (18: 28)

–

  • Mere verbal dhikr alone is not what is desired. Dhikr with the tongue should be accompanied by dhikr with the heart.

  • When we make dhikr loudly it is to serve as a reminder: to ourselves, and also to anyone else who might be nearby.

Solution to the Problems of the Ummah

  • The solution to the problems of the Ummah lies in the purification of our hearts. We have to change our inner condition, the state of our hearts, and then Allah ta’ala will change our condition: “Innallaha laa yughayyiru maa bi qawmin hattaa yughayyiroo maa bi anfusihim – Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.” (13: 11)

–

  • Purification of the heart is the purpose of the entire Din. Salah, zakah, hajj etc. they all there to purify us.

  • We can go on protest marches and chant “Death to America” and Death to Israel” but until we say “Death to our nafs” the victory from Allah ta’ala will not come.

  • Abu Bakr and ‘Umar radiyallahu ‘anhumaa both proposed for Fatimah radiyallahu ‘anhaa but it didn’t work out. They then suggested to ‘Ali radiyallahu ‘anh that he should propose. He did and it was a match made in heaven. He sold his shield, because he had nothing else to give as mahr. ‘Uthman radiyallahu ‘anh bought it from him for double its value, and then returned it to him afterwards.

–

  • When his son was born, ‘Ali radiyallahu ‘anh wanted to give him a fierce name, like ‘war’ or ‘lion’. But the Prophet sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam chose the name “al-Hasan – the Beautiful One” instead.
