Don’t Be Apologetic!

  • Don’t be apologetic about the rules of Islam when giving da’wah to non-Muslims.

Only Islam Puts us in the Right Rank

  • Everything in creation serves something else. Soil and water serve plants; plants serve animals; animals serve humans; and humans serve Allah ta’ala.

  • So if someone worships a human, ‘Isa ‘alaihis salaam for example, then he’s lowering himself to the level of animals. Or if anyone worships animals, such as those who worship cows, then he’s lowering himself to the level of plants. Only Islam puts us in our right rank.

Friends with Jews and Christians?

  • Can we take Jews and Christians as friends? This ayah seems to prohibit it: “Yaa ayyuhal ladheena aamanoo laa tattakhidhul yahooda wan nasaaraa awliyaa’; ba’duhum awliyaa’u ba’d; wamay yatawallahum minkum fa-innahu minhum; innallaha laa yahdil qawmaz zaalimeen – O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you – then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people.” (5: 51)

  • But that ayah is general. It is clarified and specified by this one (which comes just six ayat later):  “Yaa ayyuhal ladheena aamanoo laa tattakhidhul ladheenat takhadhoo deenakum huzuwaw wa la’ibam minal ladheena ootool kitaaba min qablikum wal kuffaara awliyaa’; wattaqullaha in kuntum mu’mineen – O you who have believed, take not those who have taken your religion in ridicule and amusement among the ones who were given the Scripture before you nor the disbelievers as allies. And fear Allah , if you should [truly] be believers.” (5: 57)

  • So those who mock and make fun of our religion, we have no friendship with them.

Types of non-Muslims

Surah Tawbah divides non-Muslims into three categories, and tells us how to deal with each one of them.

  • Sincere covenantors: Illalladheena ‘aahadtum minal mushrikeena thumma lam yanqusookum shay-aw wa lam yuzaahiroo ‘alaykum ahadan fa atimmoo ilayhim ‘ahdahum ilaa muddatihim; innallaha yuhibbul muttaqeenExcepted are those with whom you made a treaty among the polytheists and then they have not been deficient toward you in anything or supported anyone against you; so complete for them their treaty until their term [has ended]. Indeed, Allah loves the righteous [who fear Him]. (9: 4)

  • Those who revoke their covenants: Wa-in nakathoo aymanahum min ba’di ‘ahdihim wata’anoo fee deenikum faqatiloo a-immatal kufri innahum laa aymaana lahum la’allahum yantahoon. Alaa tuqaatiloona qawman nakathoo aymanahum wahammoo bi-ikhraajir rasooli wa hum bada-ookum awwala marrah; atakhshawnahum fallahu ahaqqu an takhshawhu in kuntum mu’mineen – And if they break their oaths after their treaty and defame your religion, then fight the leaders of disbelief, for indeed, there are no oaths [sacred] to them; [fight them that] they might cease. Would you not fight a people who broke their oaths and determined to expel the Messenger, and they had begun [the attack upon] you the first time? Do you fear them? But Allah has more right that you should fear Him, if you are [truly] believers. (9: 12 – 13)

  • Seekers of Refuge: Wa-in ahadum minal mushrikeenas tajaaraka fa-ajirhu hattaa yasma’a kalaamallahi thumma abligh-hu ma’manah; dhaalika bi-annahum qawmul laa ya’lamoon – And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah . Then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know. (9: 6)

Treatment of non-Muslims

  • The word ‘birr‘ means extreme kindness. There are two cases where this word is used in relation to dealing with people. The first is to ones parents (19:14 and 19:32). The second is to non-Muslims who do not fight us: “Laa yanhaakumullahu ‘anilladheena lam yuqatilookum fid deeni walam yukhrijookum min diyaarikum an tabarroohum watuqsitoo ilayhim; innallaha yuhibbu almuqsiteen – Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes – from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.” (60: 8 )

  • But those non-Muslims who fight us, we will not just take it lying down, but will fight back.

Original Sin

  • The Original Sin was not by Nabi Adam ‘alaihis salaam but rather by Shaitaan, in his refusal to prostrate.

  • The sin was pride, arrogance, racism. He was ejected from Paradise for that. Thus racists have no place in Paradise.
